Living Zen on a Busy Schedule
When someone thinks of Zen living, they may think, “Hey that’s a great idea, but I’m just too busy. There’s no way I could fit that in my schedule.” What they might not understand is that by simply slowing down, being mindful and doing one task at a time, they will find more time in their life. They will also find that reaching their goals and enjoying life is easier when they are not trying to do everything at the same time.
Step 1 is to only do one thing at a time. While some people might feel they are good at multi-tasking the hard truth is that no one really is. When you focus on one task at a time the work is always better. There is also less stress associated with the task when your mind is not on all the other things you need to do in your busy day. Be truly present in the task.
Step 2 is to reduce the number of tasks you perform in a day. Take a good and hard look at your to-do list; not everything is important. Decide what it truly necessary to achieve your goals and separate those tasks – keeping them at a minimum – from the ones that can be done within a few days or even weeks. Allow yourself to accomplish your daily goal and then truly enjoy the rest of your time without worry.
Step 3 is to be mindful within your trimmed down tasks for the day. Slow down and make sure you are doing things deliberately and don’t rush through an activity to get to the next one. Now that you have fewer tasks for each day, you will have more time to complete them without stress. It is as simple as scheduling a longer period of time for each task. That way if a task does take more time than you expected, you have time to finish.
Step 4 is to not be working on tasks and errands non-stop all day. Plan to take a break for at least five minutes a day to do nothing. Sitting in silence and observing your environment will help calm you and give you a better appreciation of the moment. You will also want to take time to transition from work mode to family mode. This will help you leave the work day behind and enjoy the moments you are sharing with friends and family.
If you find yourself worrying about tomorrow, take a breath to put yourself back into the moment. It takes practice and it may seem counter-productive, but you’ll find that reducing your work load and concentrating on one task at a time will make you more productive and will help you reach your goals more quickly. Don’t use the excuse of being busy to not live in the moment.
